Award Categories

Check out the possibilities with this year's categories!

Award Categories

We’re taking a different approach this year with Tech Féile, and giving more time and supports to each school and youth club. Instead of awards categories, we have selected themes that you can work within.

We’re giving out 1,000 micro:bits for students, along with weekly support sessions with a member of the TechSpace team. We will also provide guides for beginners and those with more experience to ensure that everybody gets a chance to learn and experiment.

As many of you will be working remotely throughout the next couple of months, we will ensure that each student will receive the equipment they need so that all have access to what they need, and your school or club can work together.

All Things Digital

As in other years with Tech Féile, the Digital Media category will be open to videos, podcasts, music videos, documentaries, and every other creative digital media projects you have!

So, get recording, get editing, and get creative!

Gradam STEAM

Gradam STEAM

STEAM & Computer Science

This is the space for games, coding, and robotics! We want to see your creative genius unleashed with all things STEAM!

This year, every young person taking part will receive a micro:bit. Below we have a list of recommended projects each school group, and youth club can choose from. No matter what category you choose, there are plenty of projects available, no matter what level you are at with the micro:bit.  Each contains lesson plans for the educator, along with ideas on how to come up with a project on the topic, or take an existing project and really make it your own.

What we’d like with this is for each group to be able to focus on a project together and learn about different elements of it, but with plenty of room for creativity for those who want to take their project to the next level!

Although the project ideas are here, there is much opportunity for creativity and experimentation! Want to take a sensor, and attach it to some robotics? Let us know!

If you’d like to discuss any aspect of your project before submitting your ideas, please get in touch!

UN Global Goal 14: Healthy Oceans

Life below water!

In this category, we are looking for solutions for UN Global Goal number 14: Healthy Oceans. Maybe you have a project that monitors the environment at sea, or assists with ocean cleanup? Perhaps you have an idea for an underwater robot? Whatever your idea for life below water, we’d love to see it!

This is one of three categories we have attached to the UN Global Goals. Projects in these categories may be eligible for entry to the global micro:bit do your:bit challenge.

UN Global Goal 3: Health & Wellbeing

All things good health!

This is the spot for all things micro:bit and health and wellbeing. A mood tracker? Activity tracker? Perhaps a Send a Smile project to support positive mental health? We welcome all entries that support good health in this category.

This is one of three categories we have attached to the UN Global Goals. Projects in these categories may be eligible for entry to the global micro:bit do your:bit challenge.

UN Global Goal 13: Climate Action

Your climate needs you!

With climate change more important than ever before, we want to see what you can do to support this UN Global Goal. From animal trackers to sunlight sensors, you won’t be short of great project ideas in this category!

This is one of three categories we have attached to the UN Global Goals. Projects in these categories may be eligible for entry to the global micro:bit do your:bit challenge.

Real World Solutions

Look around you!

Time to look around you, and find inspiration for this category. From burglar alarms to thermometers and clap lights to proximity sensors, anything that helps in the day to day world is welcome in this category.

Robotics

Make it move!

If it moves, it belongs here. We want to see robotic arms, robots that walk, and robots that swim. What ways can you get your micro:bit moving?

Gaming

Play it!

Bring back the Tamagotchi, organised a micro:bit radio-controlled treasure hunt, or use to your micro:bit to interact with some Scratch-based games you’ve created! If you can play it, we want it!

Music

Hit that beat!

Turn your micro:bit into a metronome, a mini jukebox, or, make a micro:bit guitar! All music-making, noise-making, beat-making projects welcome in this category!

Wearables

Wear it!

There are many ways to wear your tech, and we want you to explore them! From light-up jumpers, to health tracking solutions, there’s plenty to do in this category.

Mix It Up

Think outside of the category!

Of course, you can mix categories, and make, for example, an underwater robot. Or, perhaps, a Tamogotchi-style friend who takes steps when you do. Unleash your creativity, and see what you can do!
