Previous TechSpacer of the year in 2017 Adam has developed a project showcasing his journey of discovery and exploration into satellite imagery for this year’s ESB Creative Tech Fest Sustainable STEAM Award. A fascinating and riveting video presented by Adam himself informing us about satellite technology and how to build your own antennae so as to capture your own personalized awe-inspiring picture of a satellite.

Sphere 17 in Dublin put their metalwork skills to the test by making this unique and creative sculpture. Using scrap metal, lots of soldering, and other electronic materials, this project produced a metal creature with hidden STEAM abilities.

Where'd You Go

Milosz made the track over lockdown, as he has an interest in music production. The genre is Lo-Fi (Low Fidelity) one of his all-time favorite genres of music. He describes it as ‘Just a simple type of music, that I find relaxing’. I worked on this song over quarantine at home, I self-thought myself sound design and production on FL Studio. I worked on the song for over 4 days, After I was finished I managed to get a contract with a record label, which they will be releasing on the 16th of October.

Lee has a keen eye for photography since he attended a youth club photography workshop at a volunteer-led Foróige Youth Club in Syddan. Volunteers there have taken part in TechSpace training and are running a weekly Foróige TechSpace youth club for young people once a week.

CLUEDO: Clubhouse Edition

During the Digital Media Summer Programme in Foroige Blanchardstown, we were going through the introductory class involving presenting the basics of filmmaking, independent short film examples. It was then the young members of the program fully understood the simple process of creating a piece of digital media and how they can achieve it with only their own resources. After the presentations, we went on to brainstorm some ideas to make our own short film. After going through amazing ideas for stories, we have decided to go with the idea of adapting the murder mystery board game, CLUEDO into our own movie. All the young teens had their own roles in creating this movie. Some of them wrote the script, some of them were the actors in the movie and some of them helped with setting up the production and equipment of the film.

I was going to put just a video of me singing in my bedroom, but this idea came into my head, and I asked Angie who I knew through the youth club to give me a hand putting something together. Did a cover version of Adele’s When We Were Young.

Bury Drugs Not Your Dreams' Booklet Launch

Roscommon Comhairle na nÓg (RCNN) has continued working on issues affecting young people in County Roscommon, throughout the pandemic, via online working documents and video conference call meetings. Since last March, the committee successfully e-launched a drug education booklet entitled ‘Bury Drugs Not Your Dreams’ which caught the attention of the Irish Second-level Students’ Union (ISSU). ISSU’s Education Officer and Welfare Officer made contact and invited RCNN to collaborate with them on a new drug education resource for national distribution to every second-level school in Ireland. This project ‘GLÁN Young Choices, Future Issues’ is currently in its second draft.

Creative Computer Crossover

Remote Control Forklift

The project we are entering is a remote control forklift. The forklift uses transistors and relays to translate the low voltage signals created by 2 micro:bit processors into 9-volt signals which are then used to drive 3 motored, giving the forklift 6 separate functions. The forklift is controlled using another microbit processor which transmits radio signals to the other 2 micro:bit processors on the forklift telling the forklift which functions to perform. The project is fully re-codable and has been designed with the coding class in the school in mind. It can be used in this class to help with understanding what code is and what it does. The group created this project during lunchtimes throughout the year, it comprises skills from engineering, technology, and coding. It took us 4 months of learning, trial, and error, and manufacture to complete.

Innovative CS Award

My aim is to teach other people about climate change in a fun way. I want to show people that everybody has the power to slow down and reverse global warming. In my game players complete three different challenges. Each of these challenges teaches the player how they can help our planet. Planting trees is important for absorbing carbon from the atmosphere. It is important to recycle correctly so that not everything has to go to the landfill. Also, correct recycling means that fewer natural resources are needed from the Earth. And in the final challenge, you learn that it is important to take the bus and encourage others not to drive cars. My game also shows facts about climate change in Ireland. The format I used was Scratch because I like the idea of building my own computer game.

Helen has thrown herself into all of the TechSpace training available to her since becoming a Muinteoir Eolaíocht on the island of Inis Méain with Coláiste Naomh Eoin. She quickly adapted her teaching practice and sought out some creative education support during the initial Coivd-19 lockdown in March 2020. Her enthusiasm to support young people to be curious and resilient in 2020 has developed her school and opportunities for young people to be creative using coding, STEM, and Digital Creativity. She organized for her school to take part in ESB Creative Tech Fest during her mid-term break and has committed to the development of an after-school youth club on the island. She is always full of ideas and adapting her approach to ensure that any pupil or young person she works with has had a positive experience when comes to science capital.

OUR EPIC SOLAR SYSTEM

Oisin and his brother have been working from home all through lockdown, creating and experimenting with coding, stop motion, building robots, and erupting volcanos. His home is like a mini TechSpace hub! They are both on the autistic spectrum and coded a Scratch project about his like and being Autsitically Awesome which won a prize in our TechSpace Monthly competition. The EPIC SOLAR SYSTEM is 21 inches high and 42 inches wide

Syddan Foroige club from Co. Meath has over 50 members who before lockdown met weekly on Friday nights. The club is run by local volunteers and uses their own and other local experiences to try out lots of different activities including arts and sport. Technology is part of the range of activities on offer now and the group has worked on steam and digital projects. Covid 19 has made it difficult to meet up and run the club but the volunteers and young people have been very resourceful and entered loads of projects for ESB creative tech fest 2020.

This group created a series of instructional videos for summer camp activities and uploaded them to their website for their younger groups. They had received MOJO training at the start of the summer and adapted their newly acquired skills to create a virtual summer camp.
